Truxton Park Witch's Grave
There are a number of “Witch's Graves” throughout the United States. For example, in Aurora, Nebraska, there is a Witch's Grave in a cemetery near a park. There is also a Witch's Grave in Skiatook, Oklahoma.
There is more than one story about the Witch's Grave in Truxton Park. In one story, there were three witches buried by the slanted tree. One of the witches was hung while the other two were burnt at the stake.
Another story says that the people who were killed by the witch haunt Truxton Park. The witch was supposedly killed and buried by the tree, but then rose from the dead and ran off.
The last recorded witchcraft trial in Maryland was in 1712. At that time, Virtue Violl was acquitted of using witchcraft to harm the health and welfare of her neighbor. In fact, there were only 10 witchcraft trials held in Maryland between 1654 and 1712. Only one person in 1685, Rebecca Fowler, was actually charged and hanged for witchcraft during that time. Rebecca Fowler's case took place in Calvert County, Maryland.
A woman named Mary and her husband lived at Primrose Hill. She and her husband lived on Primrose Hill. Mary was a Methodist, which was unpopular back in the day and it is possible that she is the so-called “witch” in this tale. The Primrose Hill Cemetery is located within Truxton Park about 50 feet from Hilltop Lane. There are likely several graves here, but only one crypt is still intact.
To find the witch's grave, some people say to go past the three baseball diamonds into the woods to the “slanted tree”. This is purportedly where the witch or witches were buried. Although the slanted tree sounds like an intersting landmark, it is likely that any hauntings would be taking place in the Primrose Hill Cemetery location within the park. It sounds likely that the story of the real Mary got manipulated into something fantastical over the years. Not to say that the graveyard isn't haunted, though.
Ghosts and Hauntings at the Witch's Grave in Truxton Park in Annapolis, Maryland:
People report seeing apparitions of people in the park near the slanted tree where the witch is said to be buried. This is primarily said to occur on Halloween night, not so much the rest of the year, at least according to locals.
