About Old Camarillo State Mental Hospital | California State University, Channel Islands

Camarillo, California

Camarillo is a city in Ventura County, California in the southern part of the state. It has a population of about 60-70,000 residents.

Camarillo State Mental Hospital Information:

The Camarillo State Mental Hospital was a psychiatric hospital for the developmentally disabled as well as mentally ill patients in Camarillo, California. The hospital was opened in 1936 and functioned until it was closed in 1997. The site has been renovated and redeveloped as the California State University, Channel Islands. The bell tower in the South quad has been adopted as the symbol of the university.

Violent criminals and sexual predators were never housed at the Camarillo State Mental Hospital. Patients with a propensity for violence or sexual deviance went to a different hospital.

Camarillo State Mental Hospital was criticized for overuse of restraints and poor supervision of patients. Over time, people advocated for the release of more people into community-based group homes and from the 1960's to 1996, the patient population dropped from 7,000 to 900.

In 1997, when the Camarillo State Mental Hospital was closed down it was originally intended to be turned into a prison. Camarillo residents, however opposed this plan and interest from California State Universities took hold instead.

In the fall of 2002, California State University, Channel Islands had its first classes. Some of the buildings of the Camarillo State Mental Hospital have been restored, but a few of them have been left in various states of disrepair.
