About Wyoming State Hospital

Evanston was established in the 1870's. It is the Uintah County seat. It was named after James A. Evans, the Union Pacific railroad surveyor. Today it houses approximately 12,000 residents.

Evanston was an important refueling station along the Union Pacific Railroad because of its location along the Bear River where there was plenty of timber and water.

Interestingly, between 1870 and 1920, Evanston housed a small section of town now known as
“Chinatown” where a number of Chinese residents lived and worked along the railroad. This section of town housed an opium den as well as the Joss House. The population dwindled in the first part of the 1900's until only a very few Chinese residents remained in Evanston. In 1922 the Joss House was mysteriously burned to the ground. By the 1930's the Chinese population had disappeared completely.

Many of the Evanston churches are the original buildings. The Federal Building, Old Carnegie Library, Uintah County Courthouse, Eliza's Estate on Main Street, and the Depot Square Project are also original Evanston buildings.

The Wyoming State Hospital is still in operation and offers 230 beds. It is a facility for treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery and operates under the Wyoming Department of Health, Mental Health Division. It is the only state operated mental health facility in the state of Wyoming. The first building that was constructed for the Wyoming State Hospital was built in 1887. Today, there are 25 buildings on the Wyoming State Hospital Campus.

Appropriately, the Wyoming Department of Health includes their motto on the Wyoming State Hospital website :

"Commit to your health."
