Bayview Cemetery was founded in 1887 and the first burial at the cemetery was in 1888. This cemetery is the final resting place of the founding families of Whatcom County. The town of Whatcom purchased a 10 acre plot on the road to Whatcom in 1887 and in 1889, 12 additional acres were added to the cemetery.
Locals believe that if one lays down on a particular monuments in the cemetery (the one known as the “death bed”), that they will die an early death. Another monument, known as “angel eyes” is said to mark the grave of a person who currently haunts the cemetery.
The trees in the cemetery are an important feature as they include aged oak and elms as well as other native trees.
Historical tours of the Bayview Cemetery are offered two times a year by the city of Bellingham. Call 360-778-7150 for more information.
