“Belle Fourche” means “beautiful fork” in French. It is located at the confluence of the Belle Fourche, Redwater, and Hays Rivers. Belle Fourche was a well-known fur trading post.
Today Belle Fourche is known as the gateway to the Black Hills. It is a ranching town with a fairly health bentonite industry as well.

The Belle Fourche High School is haunted, according to students, by a former janitor. Janitorial hauntings by maintenance ghosts are fairly common throughout United States schools, actually. The janitor at Belle Fourche High School is said to have fallen to his death in the gym. The light that he was fixing now flickers on and off, which can, according to students, be attributed to the ghostly janitor.
