Castleton is located in Rutland County, Vermont. It is about 7 miles east of the New York/Vermont state line. The city has a population of about 5,000 residents.

Castleton State College is the oldest college in Vermont and the 18th oldest college in the United States. It is a public liberal arts college located in Castleton, Vermont. It has an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students.
Castleton State College was originally founded as the Rutland County Grammar School on October 15, 1787. In 1867, the grammar school transitioned into the State Normal School. For 30 years, Abel E. Leavenworth and his son Philip privately owned the school. In 1912, the State of Vermont purchased the property. In 1947, it became the Castleton Teachers College. In 1920, the school’s charter lapsed. The college reopened in 1921 under a new charter issued by the state legislature.
In 1962 Castleton joined other state supported colleges in becoming a part of the Vermont State Colleges.
Ghosts and the Paranormal at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont:
Students call the ghostly presence at Ellis Hall “Penelope”. She is blamed for the paranormal goings-on here.
Faucets at Ellis Hall turn on and off by themselves. Some students have reported that toilets flush when no one is in the bathroom.
The apparition of a woman from the shoulders up, have also been reported at Ellis Hall.
¼ of a mile south of Castleton State College:
Just off South Street on the old Delaware-Hudson Railway are train tracks that lead into a quarry. Some people have reported hearing disembodied screams at this location. They claim that a woman was killed here in the 1800’s. We have not been able to verify whether this is true or not.
