Manchester is the county seat of Bennington County in southwestern Vermont. It is a small community of about 4,000 residents.

Equinox Hotel Information:

The Equinox Hotel has been known by various other names: Marsh Tavern, Thaddeus Munson’s New Inn, Widow Black’s Inn, Vanderlip’s Hotel, The Taconic, and The Orvis Hotel.

The building occupied by the Equinox Hotel was built in 1769.

Mount Equinox, rising 3,800 feet above the village of Manchester, is directly behind the Hotel. It is the tallest peak in the Taconic Mountain range. The name “Equinox” comes from the fact that the Vermont Surveyor General, Colonel Partridge, reached the summit of the mountain on the autumnal equinox in 1823.

The Equinox Hotel building was shuttered and decaying between 1972 and 1985. In 1985, it was reopened as a resort hotel.
