Story of the Anson Bridge | Hangman’s Bridge | Bitter Creek Bridge:
The tales surrounding this once popular urban legend have been overshadowed somewhat by the Anson lights. Anson Bridge was, according to some, the site of a wrongful execution. An innocent man was said to have been hanged on the Bitter Creek Bridge by the Sheriffs and Deputies in the area. The ghost of this man supposedly haunts the bridge, seeking revenge against the people who put him to death sometime in the 1800’s.
The bridge makes a lot of noise. People report hearing it groan and creek eerily in the wind. Some people report that the wind blows on one side, but not on the other at times. Other people have heard disembodied footsteps following them when they try to go out onto the bridge to see what they can see.
Years ago, the state of Texas replaced the old steel bridge with a new steel and concrete version.
