Ackley is home to about 1,809 residents who purportedly came primarily from Ostfriesland, Germany. In 1852, L.H.Artedge staked the first claim in Ackley, but Thomas Downs is the man credited with becoming the first permanent resident of Ackley. J. William Ackley was a member of surveying team that was sent out in town’s early days to determine whether the Etna Township wherein Ackley is located would be suitable for a railroad station. It was decided that indeed the Etna Township would be suitable and thus the community of Ackley grew up around this railroad stop which was completed in 1865-1866. J. William Ackley, interestingly, never lived in Ackley.
Fires were apparently quite common in the early days of Ackley’s history according to some documents.
Hardin County was organized in 1852 by John J. Hardin who was a leader in the Black Hawk Wars. The town of Eldora, which is the county seat of Hardin County, was named by Mrs. S. J. Edginton after the name of her child who had just died.
Ackley has celebrated Sauerkraut Days annually in September since 1903.
