Asheville, North Carolina

The Jackson Building is a 15 story structure that was built in 1924. Thomas Wolfe’s father owned the land where the Jackson Building was built. He used it to run a tombstone business. L. B. Jackson chose the site as the place where he wanted to build his 15 story skyscraper. It was the first skyscraper built in Asheville, North Carolina.

The haunting of the Jackson Building by a man who supposedly committed suicide following the stock market crash at the beginning of the Great Depression is similar to the story told at City Hall. Asheville, North Carolina was hit hard in the Great Depression. For example, on November 30, 1930, 8 Asheville banks failed. The per capita debt in Asheville, North Carolina in 1930 was the highest debt owed in the country. It’s possible that a number of people in the city did in fact commit suicide on account of “losing it all”, or its possible that the impact of the Great Depression caused people to tell some fictitious stories that have survived and evolved into folklore and urban legend.

The Jackson Building Ghosts and the Paranormal:

The ghost of a man who hung himself in the Jackson Building is said to haunt this location. His face appears to visitors in the top windows of the Jackson Building and then disappears suddenly.
