Decatur is located in Macon County, Illinois along the Sangamon River and Lake Decatur in the central part of the state. It is a city of about 80,000 residents.

Decatur was founded in 1823. Abraham Lincoln lived west of Decatur in 1830 and practiced law in the city after he moved to nearby Springfield, Illinois.

Lincoln Theater Information:

The Lincoln Theater was built in 1916. It is named after Decatur’s most notable resident, Abraham Lincoln.

Prior to the construction of the Lincoln Theater, the Priest Hotel stood at the site where the theater not stands. The Priest Hotel opened in 1880 and functioned until it burned down in 1904.

Ghosts and the Paranormal at the Lincoln Theater in Decatur, Illinois:

The Lincoln Theater is said to be haunted by several ghosts. Staff at the theater referr to this ghost as “Red” and they claim that he used to be an employee at the Lincoln Theater. Red is said to have fallen from the catwalk of the Lincoln Theater to his death and thus he still haunts the building today.

Lincoln Theater visitors have also reported seeing the apparition of a male and a female standing on the stairs.

Various people have had strange encounters with these various entities. They have reported hearing disembodied footsteps, feeling cold spots, and hearing disembodied voices of people talking on the stage when no one is there. They have also reported seeing ghostly audience members from the stage.

The Lincoln Theater has been in the throes of a major renovation project since 1990, but it is still open and hosts live entertainment.
