History:

Alfred Packer (January 21, 1842 – April 23, 1907) is buried in the Littleton Cemetery. He was an American prospector who was accused of cannibalism. He was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 40 years in prison.

His trade was shoemaking. He was dismissed from the military twice due to epilepsy.

In 1874, Alfred Packer and five other men made their way to the Rocky Mountains toward Gunnison. Chief Ouray advised them to postpone their expedition until spring to avoid the dangers of winter. However, the group decided to continue on. They became hopelessly lost and snowbound in the heart of the Rockies. Packer claimed that he had gone out scouting and when he returned found another man (named "Shannon Wilson Bell") in his party roasting human flesh. Packer claimed that Bell rushed him with a hatchet and out of self-defense Packer shot Bell. Upon making his way to Saguache, Colorado in April of 1874, Packer made the assertion that Bell had gone mad and murdered the others in his party. Packer was tried in a court of law and his story was apparently not believable and he was sentenced to 40 years. According to rumors, after Packer was released on parole in February 1901, he became a vegetarian.

Recent forensic research has shown that Packer’s story that Bell had gone mad and killed the others with a hatchet may actually have been true. Bodies were exhumed and examined to find that the other people in Packer’s party appear to have been killed by a hatchet while Bell was shot.

Haunting:

According to Shadowlands, apparitions of a goat (yes, a goat) named "Angelica" has been reported here. This goat, according to Shadowlands, was Alfred Packer’s medium. There is no evidence that Alfred Packer had a goat named Angelica, and even less evidence that the goat had psychic abilities.
