Sanitarium Hill Information:
Sanitarium Hill is known officially as the Northport Office of the Dane County Department of Human Services. It was once the Lake View Tuberculosis Sanatorium. Colloquially it is known today as Sanitarium Hill.
To get to Sanitarium Hill, take East Johnson Street out of Madison, Wisconsin. Take a right on Fordem Avenue (north). Fordem Avenue turns into North Sherman Avenue. On North Sherman Avenue, take a left on Northport Drive/Highway 113 (west). Sanitarium Hill/Northport Office of the Dane County Department of Human Services is on the right side of the road at 1202 Northport Drive.
Sanitarium Hill, as it is popularly known to Madison locals, is a five story brick building overlooking a gently sloping hill that is popular as a sledding area in the winter. The hill extends down to Northport Drive.
Today, the Dane County Department of Human Services is located in what used to be the Lake View Tuberculosis Sanatorium. The building was utilized as a sanatorium between 1930 and 1960. In 1966, the Dane County Department of Human Services moved into the building.
