Mansion on the Hill

Visit www.holidaywest.com/mansionhill.htm to see photos of the Mansion on the Hill and read more about it’s history.

Facts and History:

This house was built in 1887. It is an authentic Victorian style home. The house was contracted to be built by a wealthy gentleman, L.A. Brandhoefer, from Chicago who became enamored with the vast open prairies in Ogallala. He built the home as a wedding gift for his sweetheart, whom he left behind in Chicago. When he returned to Chicago, he discovered that she had married another man.

The Mansion on the Hill was built during Ogallala’s early history, when it was still a fledgling town that had grown up around the Union Pacific Railroad.

It is currently under the ownership of the Keith County Historical Society.

The Haunting:

There is a light in the back room of the mansion that is sometimes turned on late at night when no one is in the building. Employees have reported seeing a shadowy figure walking through the hallways in the middle of the afternoon.

When we did our preliminary research, we took several photos that showed an orb (or a piece of dust…you decide) over one of the windows upstairs.

Observations:

The Mansion on the Hill is located just a few blocks from Boot Hill, a cemetery of early pioneers and cowboys.
