Nancy Young’s Grave:
Nancy Young’s grave is located deep in the woods off Jencks Road, not far from the Connecticut border, in the Young family plot.
Nancy Young is one of New England’s notorious vampires. She was the oldest daughter of Captain Levi Young and his wife Anna of Foster, Rhode Island. She died of “galloping consumption” on April 6, 1827 at 19 years of age.
A few months after Nancy Young’s death, Almira also fell ill. Almira told her father, Captain Young that Nancy had appeared to her and told her that her pain would soon be over. Captain Young as well as the town elders were alarmed by this when they learned about it. Thus it was decided that a demon was plaguing the Young family and that it inhabited Nancy Young’s body.
Nancy’s coffin was exhumed and burned as the Young’s stood around it, holding hands. The idea was that the smoke from the burning coffin would cleanse the family from the “contamination”.
Sadly, Almira still perished from the disease as well as four more of the Young’s children.
