Camarillo is a city in Ventura County, California in the southern part of the state. It has a population of about 60-70,000 residents.

Camarillo State Mental Hospital Information:

The Camarillo State Mental Hospital was a psychiatric hospital for the developmentally disabled as well as mentally ill patients in Camarillo, California. The hospital was opened in 1936 and functioned until it was closed in 1997. The site has been renovated and redeveloped as the California State University, Channel Islands. The bell tower in the South quad has been adopted as the symbol of the university.

Violent criminals and sexual predators were never housed at the Camarillo State Mental Hospital. Patients with a propensity for violence or sexual deviance went to a different hospital.

Camarillo State Mental Hospital was criticized for overuse of restraints and poor supervision of patients. Over time, people advocated for the release of more people into community-based group homes and from the 1960′s to 1996, the patient population dropped from 7,000 to 900.

In 1997, when the Camarillo State Mental Hospital was closed down it was originally intended to be turned into a prison. Camarillo residents, however opposed this plan and interest from California State Universities took hold instead.

In the fall of 2002, California State University, Channel Islands had its first classes. Some of the buildings of the Camarillo State Mental Hospital have been restored, but a few of them have been left in various states of disrepair.

Ghosts and the Paranormal at the Camarillo State Mental Hospital | California State University, Channel Islands in Camarillo, California:

The Bell Tower at the California State University, Channel Islands is particularly haunted, according to some reports. Students and staff have reported seeing a woman in white near and inside the halls of the Bell Tower. The ghost of a man has also been reported at the bus stop near the Bell Tower. And finally, a female ghost has been reported in one of the women’s restrooms in the Bell Tower. This feminine entity makes strange sounds. Sometimes, students report her disembodied voice mumbling incessantly.

The disembodied sounds of children’s voices have been heard in the Children’s Center near the Bell Tower. The apparition of an old woman reportedly walks up to students and asks for directions to the chapel and then disappears. Another ghostly woman is said to wander the halls in the daytime. Mists and strange light anomalies have been reported. People regularly report seeing a fleeting figure out of the corners of their eyes. They look, but there is no one there. Disembodied voices and strange sounds have also been reported. Students and staff have reported strong feelings of uneasiness in various places at the California State University, Channel Islands.
