Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his Mormon disciples. They farmed the arid valley. Salt Lake City remains the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, less than half of the population of Salt Lake City proper are Mormon today.

Salt Lake City is home to about 200,000 residents. It is the capital and most populated city in Utah.

Rio Grande Depot Information:

The Rio Grande Depot opened its doors in 1911. By the 1950′s new technologies in transportation meant that cars and planes were being used by people more and more to travel. Railway passenger service declined. The Rio Grande Zephyr ran passengers to Denver three times weekly until the Thistle mudslide of 1983, which brought the line to a sudden end.

A few years after the mudslide, Amtrak moved in and ran trains out of the Rio Grande Depot until the tracks were moved west in 2000.

In 1977, the state of Utah bought the Rio Grande Depot for $1 as a home for State History.
