Spencer State Hospital for the Insane Information:

Spencer State Hospital for the Insane was built to meet the increasing demand for another facility to care for “the insane”. The first hospital was built in Weston, West Virginia in 1859. This building is known today as the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Hearings regarding the Spencer State Hospital for the Insane began in 1885. The decision to put the hospital in Spencer happened in 1887. In 1893, the building was finally completed and opened.

The facility took in 54 patients in 1893. By 1899, there were 389 patients in the facility and by 1910, the number had risen to 696.

The Spencer State Hospital for the Insane, once built was ¼ mile long. It has sometimes been referred to as the longest continuous brick building in the United States.

The building is currently slated for demolition.
