Onionhead has been reported at Haaswood Cemetery, the Camp Salmen Nature Park, and Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery as well.
Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery is said to be haunted by Onionhead, a deformed man who makes his home in Louisiana graveyards.
Though most people associated the legend of Onionhead with Haaswood Cemetery, locals claim that this deformed man also haunts Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery as well. His head is oddly shaped due to disease and he is either a murderer or witness to the tragic death of children in a fire.
He also visits Camp Salmen Nature Park and Greenwood Cemetery.

The Haaswood Cemetery is said to be haunted by Onionhead, a disfigured fellow who either witnessed the death of some children in a fire or killed them himself. Onionhead is rarely, if ever actually spotted by visitors to the cemetery, but many are still spooked by his presence according to locals. His disfigured head is the result of a disease.
Interestingly, the Haaswood Cemetery is also known as East Union Cemetery. “East Union” sounds very similar to the word, “Onion”. Just sayin’.
This haunted cemetery has been cleaned up a bit and it is in fair condition now, according to some locals. The cemetery is old and there are many graves that are unmarked.
Onionhead has also been reported in Camp Salmen Nature Park, Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, and the Greenwood Cemetery. The tale is similar in some respects to those told of “Melonheads” in Ohio and Connecticut.
To get to Haaswood Cemetery, travel north from Slidell along Highway 11. Continue toward St. Joe and then turn right onto Haaswood Road. Follow the road to the cemetery. Or, take an alternate route by turning onto St. Joe Road. Continue for 1.5 miles to a grated road and then turn left. Continue for about .3 miles.
The Hookman’s Cemetery in Acadia Parish, Louisiana is one of several in the state where paranormal activity reportedly occurs.
See Hookman’s Cemetery in Robert’s Cove, LA or Hookman’s Cemetery in Rayne, LA or go farther afield to Hookman’s Graveyard in Peru, IN to learn more about the myths and legends surrounding the Hookman.
According to locals, there were car accidents along the road leading to Hookman’s Cemetery in Rayne, LA and vandalism forced the community to close it off to the public. Locals say that a police officer murdered his girlfriend at this location, but we haven’t verified this piece of gossip yet.
The Hookman’s Cemetery is located on private property off Ohlenforst Road in Rayne, LA. Ask permission before you investigate (the owner of the property operates a gun store, so beware).
There is a wooden bridge near the haunted cemetery known as “Hookman’s Bridge” where the Hookman is said to have murdered his son and then killed himself. Some visitors report hearing the disembodied sound of the son screaming as he fell from the bridge to his death.
Traveling out of Rayne, LA on Ohlenforst Road travel past the old wooden bridge. To the right, there is a curve and a grassy area near the woods. Walk 200 feet into the woods where you’ll find some paths to Hookman’s Cemetery.
The PASS paranormal investigation team investigated this location. Visit their web site to see photos and learn more about their experience at this location.
There are a number of Hookman’s Cemeteries throughout Louisiana and the United States including a Hookman’s Cemetery in Peru, IN and a Hookman’s Cemetery in Robert’s Cove, LA.

Hookman’s Cemetery is the site where the Hookman is purportedly buried at the top of a hill in a rural area between Peru and Wabash, Indiana. This lurid fellow, the Hookman, was said to walk lover’s lane in Peru, Indiana in search of hapless couples to attack with his prosthetic hook.
The Hookman’s Graveyard is located between Peru and Wabash, Indiana. Take Highway 24 going east out of Peru. Then, take a sharp right before reaching Wabash on a road called “Lover’s Lane”. This road looks more like a driveway into a business than a road. The dirt road juts south at a sharp angle. Continue along Lover’s Lane to the first dirt road on the left. Take this road to the haunted cemetery in Peru, IN. Because the roads are unpaved, consider visiting when the weather is dry and no precipitation is expected.
Visitors say there is a perpetual fog that sits on top of the cemetery’s hill. Shadowy mists and disembodied voices have been reported here.
In Robert’s Cove, Louisiana, there is another Hookman’s Cemetery worth checking out although the story behind this haunted graveyard is quite different from the haunted cemetery in Peru, Indiana.

The caretaker of this cemetery purportedly witnessed the apparition of a Lady in White and a man wearing a three-piece suit. This haunted cemetery near New Orleans was founded in 1849 by the Order of Odd Fellows and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The first sixteen bodies in this haunted graveyard were moved from other cemeteries. All the plots were filled by 1930. Due to the slightly higher elevation of the cemetery, it has been immune from much of the flooding that has plagued other areas near New Orleans.
This haunt is one of the least visited and most dilapidated cemeteries in New Orleans. Gravestones are overturned and shattered and tombs are slowly crumbling away. Many of the bones have been removed and some of the tombs are just an empty shell with nothing inside.

The Village Cemetery, located on Bay State Road in Rehoboth, MA, dates back to the 1600’s. It is haunted by at least three apparitions. The most notable is probably that of an older man in eigtheen century clothing, who is seen sobbing and laughing near at one particular grave in the Southwest corner. He is known to yell obsceneties at people, particularly women, and scare them away . One woman was so frightened that she fled the cemetery and as she was driving away, she saw him kneeling over a woman in Victorian garb, pounding her with his fists and shouting the name ‘Catherine.’ Other witnesses have reported an old man screaming and pounding on their car windows. There are also reports of a floating woman in white and a little boy moving about the tombstones.

This is the Number One Most Unusual Haunt in Lousiana, according to our staff at Hauntings! The Oak Manor Cow Graveyard is home to a herd of grazing cow ghosts. Not only do the slightly transparent cows nibble at slightly transparent grass, they also sometimes attack, so beware! Even more unusual than the Roux-Ga-Roux, our opinion, the oak manor cows are truly unique. Congratulations, Houma!

There are many headless ghosts in Louisiana and one of them is said to walk the Greenwood Cemetery in Greenwood, LA. Disembodied voices and strange sounds have also been reported at the cemetery. This isn’t surprising given the history of the location.
Maybe because this is the only truly French state in the Union, Louisiana haunts seem to attract ghosts that are missing their heads. Another headless ghost walks the levees of Chalmette Battlefield and though there are no headless ghosts reported at Headless Cemetery in Eunice it makes sense in an odd way to label the cemetery “Headless” just because it’s in Louisiana.
Greenwood Cemetery was once the site of Stoner Plantation as well as a Civil War military hospital. A single cross in the middle of Pauper’s Field marks the site where poor folks were given a free burial. There are no burial markers on this small plot of land at Greenwood Cemetery, but the graves are numbered.
Milton Taylor Hancock has a tomb at Greenwood Cemetery. His four-year old daughter, Ethyl died in 1892 and she was buried in a cast iron coffin and placed in a tomb at the cemetery. A chair was placed in the tomb for Milton’s wife, Nina, who would sit in each evening to read the little girl bedtime stories after her death. In 1903, the Hancocks lost their 24 year old daughter, Irene. She was buried with Ethyl in the Greenwood Cemetery tomb. The Hancocks moved to Los Angeles, CA with their only surviving child, Milton Hancock, Jr. In 1905, the 16 year old was driving a car that was struck. He died in one of the first automobile accidents in the United State. He was also buried in the Greenwood Cemetery tomb.

Miller Cemetery, better known as “Headless Cemetery” is a famous haunt in the Eunice, Louisiana area. According to Shadowlands, the ghost of a headless man occupies the premises. Locals say that if you go to Headless Cemetery late at night, you’ll have some sort of car trouble due to the haunting.
The cemetery is located on private property and it’s important that you get permission to visit the haunted cemetery. The owner lives nearby and after dark, you’ll have to have permission to visit. Take Highway 13 toward Mamou, LA from Eunice. Continue to the water tower and then turn right. Proceed past two curves in the road. There is a trailer house on the left. Turn left, into the driveway leading to the trailer house. This is the road that will lead to the cemetery. Stop at the house and ask permission to visit.
Louisiana Paranormal Investigators have been to the location. They were able to capture EVP’s and experienced the sound of disembodied footsteps walking on the property.
Some locals claim that this location was once used by Satanists, but this information has not yet been verified by our team.
