The Louisiana State Capitol building is located in downtown Baton Rouge. The House of Representatives, Senate, and the Governor all carry out their business in the building. The building has 34 stories. It is the tallest building in the city. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also a National Historic Landmark.

The first state capitol building was completed in 1882, but it proved too small by the 1920’s. A new Louisiana state capitol building was completed in 1932 thanks to encouragement from Governor Huey Long. In September, 1935, Huey Long was shot in the State Capitol building by a man named Carl Weiss. Weiss was then gunned down by Louisiana State Police. Long lingered for two days before dying at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital on September 10th.

On April 26, 1970, a bomb went off in the Senate Chamber. The bomb was made up of 20 to 30 sticks of dynamite. It was detonated in retaliation for the death of 3 African Americans who were shot by police. The only evidence of the explosion today is a pencil embedded in the ceiling.

A congressman or senator is said to haunt the Louisiana State Capitol building. Known as “Pierre”, according to Shadowlands, this ghost tends to linger upstairs.A more likely ghost would be Carl Weiss or Huey Long.

Security officers have reported motion sensors going off when no one is on the upper floor particularly in the middle of the night. Video cameras show no sign of anyone, but still the motion sensors are triggered. A female security guard claims to have seen an apparition and several tour guides have reported seeing doors opening and closing on their own.

This haunted school once functioned as a courthouse and prison, which explains it’s ghostly inhabitants.

This building was the first courthouse in St. Bernard. It was used as the seat of government for the parish until it was moved to Chalmette in 1939. Then, the building was used as St. Bernard High School, P.G.T. Beauregard High School, and also P.G.T. Beauregard Middle School.

According to locals, when the building was used as a courthouse, parts of it were also used as a prison. Some of the inmates are said to have died in the building and now, as a result, visitors sometimes hear chains rattling and the disembodied sounds of prisoners screaming.
