Baldwin-Wallace College Information:

Baldwin-Wallace College is a liberal arts college located in Berea, Ohio. It was founded in 1845. Baldwin-Wallace College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

The city of Berea as well as Baldwin-Wallace College were founded by Methodist settlers from Connecticut. The settlers moved to the area after their homes were plundered and burned by the British in the Revolutionary War. This region in Northern Ohio became known as the “Western Reserve” (a parat of which was designated the “Firelands”, as the state of Connecticut gave land grants to these fire victims).

John Baldwin founded Baldwin University in 1845 as the Baldwin Institute, after his initial goal of founding a Lyceum school and commune failed to take hold. The Baldwin Institute became Baldwin University in 1855. Baldwin admitted students regardless of their race or gender and was one of the first schools in the nation to do so. Courses at Baldwin University were not segregated.

German Wallace College was founded in 1855 by James Wallace, to serve Germans in the area. The two school merged in 1913.
