Calico, California

Calico is located in the Calico Mountains of the Mojave Desert in southern California.

Calico is an old west mining town that was established in 1881 during the largest silver strike in California. There were about 500 silver mines in Calico that were active for 12 years in the late 1800’s. When silver lost its value, miners packed up and left the town behind. Calico turned into a ghost town.

In the 1950’s, Walter Knott purchased what remained of Calico and restored most of the original buildings to look as they did in the 1880’s. Calico became a State Historical Landmark and was proclaimed to be California’s Silver Rush Ghost Town in 2005.
