The story about Cry Baby Bridge is related to Mars Hill Church, another famous haunted location in the area. Ottumwa locals claim that a mother had her newborn baby baptized in the church. Later that day, she threw it in the river off of Cry Baby Bridge.

Ottumwa locals claim that if they turn off the lights of their car while sitting on the bridge, that they will hear the disembodied sounds of a baby crying.
