Mitchell is a larger city in South Dakota with almost 15,000 residents. The village of Mitchell was platted in 1879 and incorporated in 1881 and named after Alexander, Mitchell, the president of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad.
Mitchell, South Dakota is home to the world famous Corn Palace. Some people call it a giant bird feeder, which it is, but most see the Corn Palace as a work of art. The Corn Palace is a one-of-a-kind and so definitely worth a look-see if you’re in Mitchell, South Dakota doing some ghost hunting anyway.
Also in Mitchell, South Dakota is the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village. Archeologists believe that the indian village was home to the ancestors of the Mandan that resided nearby in North Dakota. The Dakota Discovery Museum is nearby with a number of cultural artifacts as well.
Dakota Wesleyan University is a small, private university in Mitchell, South Dakota that is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It was founded in 1885 and is now over 125 years old.
Graham Hall was recently demolished. Dakota Wesleyan University considered renovating Graham Hall but instead chose to demolish the building and use some of the materials to build the McGovern Library instead.
