History and Demographics for Fort Sisseon, South Dakota:

Major General John Pope established a series of forts in eastern South Dakota about 130 years ago and Fort Sisseton was one of them. The soldiers at Fort Sisseton were responsible for ensuring the safety of folks traveling through this area into Dakota Territory.

In 1959, Fort Sisseton was designated a State Historical Park. The Fort Sisseton State Historical Park is open Memorial through Labor Day from 10 A-6 P seven days a week. It is open from 8 A-4:30 P Mondays through Fridays in September and by appointment from October through May. The Fort Sisseton Historical Festival is held each year on the first FULL weekend in June.
