History and Demographics of McLaughlin, South Dakota:

McLaughlin is located in Corson County, South Dakota. It is the largest city in the Standing Rock Indian Reservation with 775 people. The Standing Rock Indian Reservation is a Dakota and Lakota reservation with the sixth largest land-area of any Indian Reservation in the United States.

The city is named after James McLaughlin, a United States Indian Service Agent who is buried in McLaughlin. James saw it as his duty to encourage the Natives to adapt to western Anglo/Saxon ways. He was responsible for Sitting Bull’s arrest and the subsequent Army-Lakota confrontation on Pine Ridge at Wounded Knee. Originally James McLaughlin was a blacksmith and general overseer. He died in 1923.
