Romney was originally settled in 1725. It is West Virginia’s oldest town, having been chartered on December 23, 1762.

Ethereal sounds of a piano playing have been reported at the Peterkin Religious Retreat. Disembodied voices and footsteps have been reported. Guests believe that this is the ghost of a man named Mr. Turley who died here of a heart attack. He was one of the original inhabitants at the Peterkin Religious Retreat and his ghost has been reported since the retreat began back in the 1940’s.
